German grade calculator
Your grade in German terms
An estimate with the modified Bavarian formula. uni-assist or your university makes the official conversion.
Tip: the pass grade is usually printed on your transcript.
German grade
2.2
Good (gut)
Formula: German grade = 1 + 3 × (best grade − your grade) ÷ (best grade − pass grade)
See the step-by-step calculation
- 1. Distance from the top: 4 − 3.2 = 0.8
- 2. Passing range: 4 − 2 = 2
- 3. Your share: 0.8 ÷ 2 = 0.4
- 4. On the German scale: 1 + 3 × 0.4 = 2.20
- 5. Keep one decimal: 2.2
- 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 the lowest pass.
